What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is a chronic condition that can last for long periods of time and cause severe and even debilitating pain. Arthritis attacks the joints in your body and can strike almost anywhere, from hands and fingers to wrists and elbows to knees and feet.

Prevalence of Arthritis Pain
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in five adults in the United States have been diagnosed with arthritis by a doctor. From 2010 to 2012, the CDC reports that 49.7% of adults 65 years or older had reported an arthritis diagnosis. Therefore, arthritis aids for seniors are especially important in helping older adults manage such painful symptoms.

Common Kinds of Arthritis
While arthritis pain can happen to anyone, it is most common in seniors. The most common types of arthritis that seniors suffer from are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout.

Osteoarthritis occurs when cartilage, joint lining and ligaments break down, leading to pain and joint stiffness. Arthritis of the knees, hips, hands and spine may be due to osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory type of arthritis that can affect multiple joints of the body. While the cause is unknown, rheumatoid arthritis is said to happen as the result of a faulty response in one’s immune system.

Gout is an acute, recurring form of arthritis that is characterized by painful inflammation of the joints and primarily seen in the feet and hands, especially the big toe. Gout is caused by an excess of uric acid in the blood that winds up being deposited as needle-like crystals in the joints and/or soft tissues.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is known for causing severe wrist pain. CTS is commonly caused by inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis and occurs when pressure is put on the median nerve that runs from the forearm of the hand to the center of the wrist (this path is otherwise known as the carpal tunnel). The pain is caused by swelling of the synovium membrane that surrounds the tendons that run through the carpal tunnel alongside the median nerve.
